Unfortunately, due to revision, I’ve not had the time to research and create a post (sorry! but it’s my blog!!). However, I did find an interesting website whilst researching for uni applications. This blog is run by an undergraduate student at the University of Sheffield and is centred on their research into post-war Japanese fascism. It is extremely interesting, and I highly recommend it!

As someone from the UK, I naturally feel quite disconnected from Japanese & Asian history however Asia has always been a continent that has interested me greatly, partly due to the UK curriculum really not teaching anything about Asian history and so it almost feels like this unexplored part of history that I can explore without the constraints of a marking scheme lol.

Additionally, I would say fascism in post-war Japan is quite a good introduction as there are heavy links to WW2 and in particularly German and Russian history. This due to the dominance of Marxist scholars post-WW2, which draws heavy similarities to Marxist-Leninism in Russia and also the assassination of Asanuma Inejiro by 17 year-old Yamaguchi Otoya, an avid reader of Hitler’s Mein Kampf, linking very clearly to Germany.

Since 1945, fascism has been an enduring presence in Japan. From the fascist aesthetics of Mishima Yukio, to the self-described fascists of the Yakuza mob world, fascism, ultranationalism, and the far-right generally have ensured that the wartime culture of fascism has never fully disappeared. And yet, in discussions of global fascism and the far-right, Japan…

  1. Okay, this is a very weird turnaround from my last blog post, but I’m just a girl! And it’s my blog! I’ll do something extra girly tomorrow, perhaps the historical accuracy of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette – at least I’ll have lots to write!
